Krystal "Krys" Shelley

is an activist and storyteller based in LA who has spoken widely about being formerly incarcerated and the impact the prison system has on personal and community development. Krys is a member of the California Coalition for Women Prisoners.

The first thing that you need to do to be an effective activist, if you have not been incarcerated, you need to speak to people that have been incarcerated … their experiences that come from the inside are very important … But on the other side, between somebody that has not been incarcerated and somebody that has been incarcerated, there’s a big language barrier … So, start with the stories from inside, then have a clear communication and deliver it.
